28 July 1940. Under pressure from Adolf Hitler at the Salzburg Conference, Vojtech Tuka strengthens his position within the wartime Slovak State and becomes one of Nazi Germany’s closest allies in Central Europe.
From lawyer and nationalist politician to Slovak prime minister and foreign minister under Jozef Tiso, Vojtech Tuka helped push Slovakia deeper into alliance with Nazi Germany during the Second World War. The story explores his role in introducing anti-Jewish laws, the activities of the Hlinka’s Guard, and the deportation of more than 57,000 Slovak Jews to extermination camps including Auschwitz in 1942.
It also covers the Slovak National Uprising, the German occupation of Slovakia in 1944, and Tuka’s postwar trial, where he was ultimately sentenced to death and executed for his crimes in 1946.
