August 1941, German-occupied Ukraine. As Nazi forces advance deeper into the Soviet Union, Einsatzgruppe C and its auxiliaries begin systematically murdering the Jewish population of Bila Tserkva. After hundreds of adults are shot, around 90 Jewish children — some only a few months old — are left imprisoned in horrifying conditions, their parents already dead.
German military chaplains and Lieutenant Colonel Helmuth Groscurth attempt to prevent their murder, but Field Marshal Walter von Reichenau, commander of the German 6th Army, orders that the killing operation be completed. The children are taken to a prepared pit and shot by Ukrainian auxiliaries under German supervision.
This is the story of the Bila Tserkva massacre, the men who carried it out, those who tried to intervene, and the fate that eventually awaited several of those involved.
