Albert Forster was one of the most ruthless Nazi leaders in occupied Poland. As Gauleiter of Danzig and later Reich Governor of Reichsgau Danzig–West Prussia, he helped transform the region into a center of terror, overseeing the persecution of Poles and Jews, mass executions, forced Germanisation, ethnic cleansing, and the establishment of dozens of detention camps. Under his rule, tens of thousands of civilians were murdered, including the victims of the Piaśnica massacres, while the region was declared Judenfrei ("free of Jews") only months after the German invasion of Poland.
Explore Forster's rise from an early Nazi activist and associate of Julius Streicher to one of Adolf Hitler's most loyal Gauleiters. Discover his bitter rivalry with Arthur Greiser, his conflicts with Heinrich Himmler over Nazi racial policy, his role in the German takeover of the Free City of Danzig, his responsibility for crimes against the Polish and Jewish populations during the Second World War, and how he was ultimately tried by the Polish Supreme National Tribunal, sentenced to death, and executed for crimes against humanity.
