High Ranking Fascist Collaborators: Politicians
Belgian Nazi Mayor Whose Assassination Led to a Massacre: Oswald Englebin
12m
Oswald Englebin was a Belgian Rexist collaborator who became mayor of Greater Charleroi under the Nazi occupation. A loyal supporter of Léon Degrelle, he publicly welcomed Rexist and SS troops and became a prominent figure of collaborationist authority in the region.
On 17 August 1944, resistance fighters ambushed Englebin’s car, killing him, his wife, and his son. His assassination unleashed brutal reprisals by Rexist militias, culminating in the Courcelles massacre, in which 27 civilians were murdered.
