On 29 April 1945, American forces liberated Dachau, the first regular concentration camp established by Nazi Germany. Inside they found thousands of starving survivors, railway cars filled with corpses, and overwhelming evidence of years of mass murder.

This documentary tells the story of Heinrich Wicker, the last Nazi commandant of Dachau. It follows his path from the Hitler Youth and SS to his leadership of concentration camp subcamps, his role in deadly death marches, and his final decision to surrender Dachau to American forces.

The film also examines the liberation of the camp, the controversial reprisals that followed, and the conflicting accounts of Wicker's death. Was he killed by American soldiers or by former prisoners seeking revenge? More than eighty years later, the exact circumstances remain disputed.
