Nazi Who Destroyed the Warsaw Ghetto: SS General Jürgen Stroop
14m
Jürgen Stroop was the SS general sent by Heinrich Himmler to crush the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising in April 1943. Facing determined resistance from Jewish fighters, Stroop ordered the systematic destruction of the ghetto, with buildings burned and demolished as German forces advanced. Thousands were killed, while tens of thousands more were captured and deported to camps.
Stroop documented the operation in the infamous report “The Jewish Quarter of Warsaw Is No More!”, complete with photographs and detailed accounts of the destruction. After the Second World War, he was captured by American forces, convicted of war crimes, and later extradited to Poland to face justice for his role in the destruction of the Warsaw Ghetto and other crimes.
This documentary traces Jürgen Stroop’s rise through the SS, his role in suppressing the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, his later service in occupied Greece and Germany, and his final reckoning after the collapse of the Third Reich.
