The Fate of the Top Soviet Officials
Soviet Ukrainian Leader Behind Millions of Holodomor Deaths: Vlas Chubar
14m
Vlas Chubar was one of the most powerful Ukrainian officials in the Soviet Union, serving for more than a decade as the head of government of Soviet Ukraine. Although he witnessed the devastating effects of Stalin’s forced collectivisation and even warned Moscow that people were dying from famine, Chubar continued to enforce the policies imposed by the Kremlin. During the Holodomor of 1932–1933, he signed orders enforcing grain quotas, confiscations, deportations, blacklisting of villages, and restrictions on the sale of food. The script estimates that these policies contributed to the deaths of at least 3.5 million Ukrainians. Chubar later rose to full membership in the Soviet Politburo, only to become a victim of Stalin’s Great Terror himself. Arrested in 1938, he was sentenced to death and shot on 26 February 1939. In 2010, a Ukrainian court named him among those responsible for the Holodomor.
