The Butcher of Warsaw: Nazi Gestapo Chief Josef Meisinger
15m
When Nazi Germany invaded Poland in 1939, Josef Meisinger became one of the most feared Nazi officials in occupied Warsaw. Known as the “Butcher of Warsaw,” he oversaw brutal reprisals, executions, and terror against Polish civilians and Jews, including the Palmiry massacres and the wider campaign against the Polish intelligentsia.
This documentary explores Meisinger’s rise through the SS under Heinrich Himmler and Reinhard Heydrich, his role inside the Gestapo, and his involvement in political persecutions inside Nazi Germany before the war. It also examines his later activities in Japan during World War II, where he attempted to influence anti-Jewish policies while serving as a Gestapo liaison in Tokyo.
The story follows the crimes that eventually led to his capture, trial, and execution after the collapse of the Third Reich.
