Massacres of civilians during World War II
When the Wehrmacht Murdered 86 Belgian Civilians: Vinkt Massacre
13m
In May 1940, during Nazi Germany's invasion of Belgium, soldiers of the Wehrmacht's 225th Infantry Division committed one of the most notorious atrocities of the German campaign in Western Europe. In the villages of Vinkt and Meigem, German troops accused local civilians of attacking their forces and unleashed brutal reprisals.
As Belgian soldiers desperately resisted the German advance, troops of the 377th Infantry Regiment rounded up civilians, separated families and carried out mass executions. Even Belgium's surrender on 28 May failed to stop the killings. A total of 140 people died, including 86 civilians deliberately murdered by German soldiers.
This documentary examines the Vinkt Massacre, the subsequent fate of the 225th Infantry Division on the Eastern Front, and the post-war trials of German officers Erwin Kühner and Franz Lohmann.
