In May 1945, as Nazi Germany collapsed, thousands of Czech resistance fighters and civilians rose against German occupation in Prague. Armed with captured weapons and protected by nearly 2,000 barricades, they fought German troops and SS units in a desperate struggle to liberate their capital after six years of Nazi rule.
The Prague Uprising lasted from 5 to 9 May 1945, with fierce street battles, German attacks on civilians, and unexpected assistance from soldiers of the Russian Liberation Army, who had previously fought for Nazi Germany. Even after Germany's surrender, fighting continued until Soviet forces entered Prague on 9 May.
Discover how Prague fought to end Nazi occupation, the atrocities committed during the uprising, and the fate of Karl Hermann Frank, one of the most powerful Nazi officials in occupied Czechoslovakia, who was captured, tried, and sentenced to death for his crimes.
