Amanda Ratajczak was a Nazi nurse who participated in the systematic murder of patients with mental and physical disabilities at the Meseritz-Obrawalde psychiatric hospital in Nazi Germany, today located in Poland. As a senior nurse and ward supervisor, she personally administered lethal doses of medication and ordered other nurses to participate in the killings, later admitting to murdering more than 1,500 patients.
The crimes were part of Nazi Germany's so-called euthanasia programme, which targeted people the regime considered unworthy of life. Even after Adolf Hitler officially halted the centralised Aktion T4 operation in 1941, killings continued inside psychiatric hospitals through lethal injections, drug overdoses and deliberate starvation.
At Obrawalde, thousands of vulnerable patients died under the supervision of doctors and nurses who were supposed to care for them. Ratajczak continued killing patients until January 1945, shortly before Soviet forces arrived. Although she initially escaped, she was captured by Soviet troops in March 1945 and eventually paid for her crimes.
Discover the disturbing story of Amanda Ratajczak, the Nazi euthanasia programme, the crimes committed at Meseritz-Obrawalde and the final reckoning of one of its most notorious nurses.
