Massacres of civilians during World War II
317 Greek Civilians Massacred by Nazi Troops: The Kommeno Massacre
14m
In August 1943, German occupation forces carried out one of the deadliest massacres in occupied Greece. After partisans briefly passed through the village of Kommeno, the Wehrmacht falsely portrayed the incident as a partisan attack and ordered a brutal reprisal. At dawn on 16 August, German mountain troops surrounded the village, murdering 317 civilians—including women, children, infants, and wedding guests—and burning nearly every home. This documentary examines the Kommeno Massacre, the officers who ordered and carried out the atrocity, the attempted cover-up, and how some of those responsible ultimately paid for their crimes.
